I’m about to get my XJ road & off-road ready again and the axles weren’t painted with much care when installed. I’ve had it as one of the first things I do to get it going again. Any other options that’d be as good or better?

Its hard to beat POR-15. I've also used Eastwood's rust-encapsulator, but the POR-15 seems a lot more impenetrable. But if you use it, make sure you wear gloves and long sleeves. When that stuff gets on your skin, it's not coming off with out taking the skin with it. I know from experience.

We haven't seen the top. Maybe he fit a Dana 3o under a jaaaaag?

I used it on the underside of my Mustang’s trunk lid, when the factory paint blistered and peeled off after 2 1/2 years. Worked fine, and the gloss black worked well enough with a black car.
Wasn’t of use when the top side of the hood started doing the same thing though.

I’m not a Jeep guy, but love old jags. I think the same quite often here on oppo.

It’s great. But it’s rock hard and basically welded on once it’s dry. Seriously. You won’t get normal paint to stick to it long term and sanding it after it dries is a lost cause unless you just want to grind right through it. The cans are one time use if you don’t put plastic wrap on before the lid. You WILL get it on yourself, so wear as much clothing as possible, that you don’t care about. All of these things make it excellent for it’s intended usage.

Guys that I volunteer with have had great results and they actually use peanut butter jars with the plastic wrap under the lid, then they put it in the refrigerator to keep it usable for a long time.

Since I don’t post about it all the time I get the same reactions here. Sorry to disappoint. Maybe one day I’ll have both XJs.

When I go rock crawling and on trails will it chip of the bottom?
I’d guess I can touch it up, but I just hate the rust look it has now.

The stuff isn’t indestructible (close though!) , so yeah it could scratch and chip, but it should be less susceptible to damage than normal paint.

I have a Jag XJ just like the picture. Actually it could use some POR15 as well . I’m not into off-roading but if I was I could probably become a Jeep guy pretty easily.

Good if you do it right. Just make sure to prep properly.
Also, you WILL get it on yourself and it WILL NOT come off with anything other than time. Wear gloves if that bothers you.

Read this post on Race-Desert, a guy restoring an old Honcho has a decent post about the stuff:

Yes I have. The whole bottom of my Austin Healey is Por-15.

It’s good and very strong one dry (as long as the surface is prepped appropriately - i.e. clean and absolutely not oily). Don’t get it on you (and if you do wipe it off with spirits before it dries), if it dries on your skin you either take some sandpaper to it or have a temporary tattoo.
A small can goes a long way; to re-close it, I like to put a shopping bag between the lid and can. If you don’t put something in there, you’ll not be opening the can again without destroying it.
